An Ambulatory Surgery Center [ASC] is a specialized health care clinic that provides patients with outpatient surgical treatments. These clinics allow patients to receive the high-quality surgical treatments they need without the exorbitant cost of inpatient treatment in a hospital.

Orthopedic surgery topped the pack for ASC revenue per case, according to VMG Health’s “Multi-Specialty ASC Benchmarking Study” for 2022.

The specialty was only the fourth most-represented among ASC cases, however. Nationally, gastroenterology was the most-represented specialty among ASCs, with 32 percent of all cases, followed by ophthalmology, with 26 percent, and pain management and orthopedics, with 22 and 21 percent, respectively.

Average Revenue Per Case:

1. Orthopedics — $3,791

2. Gynecology — $3,117

3. Podiatry — $2,990

4. Urology — $2,724

5. Otolaryngology — $2,617

6. General surgery — $2,508

7. Plastic surgery — $2,264

8. Ophthalmology — $1,487

9. Pain management — $1,273

10. Gastroenterology — $1,079

With a concept that traces its roots back over forty years, ASCs have proven to provide exceptional levels of care and customer service while also reducing costs. They continue to grow in popularity in the face of the ever-increasing costs of health care services.

A Radiology Center [RC] uses imaging tests like x-rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging [MRI] and Computed Tomography [CT] scans that visualizes organs, anatomical structures, and bodily functions, and presents them as high-resolution pictures. The detailed medical images from radiology procedures help physicians and specialists provide a comprehensive evaluation and diagnosis of many health conditions. Some imaging techniques serve as real-time guides for treatment procedures. The specialty of interventional radiology for example, uses these precision images to combine diagnosis with treatment in a single procedure that’s often less invasive than traditional surgery.

Similarly, a Wound Care Center [WCC] is an outpatient facility that uses state-of-the-art techniques to help patients with wounds that are slow to heal or are not healing properly.

Buying, Selling or Merging an interest in a healthcare business like an Ambulatory Surgery Center, Radiology Center or Wound Care Center is complicated and a challenging entrepreneurial goal. Positive outcomes are a result of a deep understanding of the center’s and owner’s goals and having a “doctor’s knowledge” of the business. This includes service and product line extensions and transactional financial and economics expertise, extensive experience in the Seller and the Buyer communities and the ability to most effectively package, market and manage the Merger & Acquisition process.
